Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Lawler Sutton Byrne was the son of Thomas and Alice Byrne. His father had passed away three years after he was born. Lawler was the husband of Winifred Alice May Byrne of Sydney, New South Wales. He was also the father of three children.
His brother, 115 Herbert Horam Byrne 15th Battalion AIF, died of wounds received at Gallipoli, 6 May 1915.
Lawler only joined the 19th Battalion at Pozieres on the day before he was wounded in action on 2 August 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and was evacuated to England. He rejoined the 19th Battalion in the field during July 1917. He was promoted to Corporal five days before he was mortally wounded on 29 August 1918. He suffered a penetrating chest wound and died in a General Hospital in Rouen, France, at 5pm on 3 September 1918.
He left a will in favour of his wife. It appears she shifted addresses around Sydney regularly. Winifred remarried during 1920 and raised another three children.
His death was reported in the Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal. “Word was received at Nithsdale during the past week that Private Lawler Byrne, son of Mrs. T. Byrne, who, for a number of years, resided at Nithsdale, died of wounds somewhere in France. Deceased's brother, Private Horam Byrne, took part in the famous Gallipoli landing, and was wounded, dying a couple of days later.”
