Biography

"3437 Private Albert Ernest Taylor, 2nd Pioneer Battalion, of Barwon Downs, Vic. A dairy farmer prior to enlisting in March 1916, Pte Taylor embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 16 December 1916. He was killed in action on 22 September 1917 by a shell explosion at Westhoek Ridge, near Ypres, Belgium. This is one of two photographs (see also P08863.002) sent by an army chaplain to his wife, Mrs Ruby Taylor, with a letter dated 3 October 1917. The chaplain explained that the photographs : "...were found in the pay book of your husband and handed to me...it looks as if your dear good man was caught by a shell over the heart...". Pte Taylor was 30 years of age." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

"BARWON DOWNS. From our Correspondent. Monday.

Word has been received from the Defence Department that Private A. E. Taylor, of Barwon Downs, was killed in action on September 22nd. The deceased soldier was born and bred in the district, and by his kind, genial nature, had made himself very popular. He is the youngest son of Mrs. Gabriel Taylor, and leaves a wife and two children. The deepest sympathy is felt for his wife and relatives in their sad loss. Private Taylor was 30 years of age." - from the Colac Reformer 23 Oct 1917 (nla.gov.au)
