Len was the sixth of ten children of George Hickson (born 1846 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Matilda Jane Wallace (born 1856 in Calliope, Gladstone Region, QLD). George was a Grazier at Calliope in the Gladstone Region when he married Matilda in 1876. Following George's death in 1910, Matilda moved to Invermay, QLD.

Len was christened Linnet Sinclair in 1888 and used 'Linnet' and 'Leonard' interchangeably throughout his life - a brother christened Leonard had died shortly after birth in 1886. Len was a Labourer at Barmundu in Gladstone QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 (although he stated on his Attestation Papers that he was a Grazier). Len served as a Private (Service No:1007) with 3rd and 11th Light Horse Regiments and as a Driver with 5th Army Service Corps (AASC). He was Discharged in 1918.

Returning from War, Len worked initially as a Labourer at Barmundu before moving to Roma, QLD in 1920 where he was a Grazier and Farmer. In the early 1940s he moved to Imbil at Widgee in Wide Bay, QLD where he was a Timber Worker. Len was in Brisbane, QLD in 1944 when he married Mary Ellen Grossmith Beck (nee Dicks, born 1889 in Brisbane, QLD). The couple moved to Eidsvold, QLD where Len was Licensee of the Post Office Hotel. Following Mary Ellen's death in 1954, Len retired to Caloundra, QLD where he married Dianna Quetta Lawson (nee Marshall, born 1890 at Umolo, QLD) in 1955. Len died in 1963 and Dianna in 1971.
