Arthur Leonard Hargrave was born on the 26 March 1894 in Adelaide, South Australia. In the years leading up to World War One, Arthur worked as a soap maker and miller. On the 9th of February, 1915 Arthur enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He was involved in the Private 11th Infantry Battalion, where they embarked and proceeded to Fremantle in 1915. On the 6th of June 1918, Arthur was involved in the 50th Battalion where he was a runner during operations near Zonnebeke, Belgium. This is also where Arthur was wounded, discharged from the AIF, and sent to the United Kingdom to recover. While recuperating, he met Alice Fraser Stott in Edinburgh and proposed. A short time after, Arthur and Alice got married on the 25th December 1917 and returned to Australia. At the age of 72, he died of cancer at the Daw Park Repat Hospital, South Australia on the 8th of September 1966. Arthur is buried at the Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide. Arthur Leonard Hargrave was awarded the Military Medal and has been recognised in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette and the London Gazette.
