Add my storyBiography
Henry was the youngest of six boys. Three of his brothers - Sam, Dick and Jim - also enlisted and fought in WWI. Henry's parents were George and Eliza Hope. His father was a house painter and Henry was apprenticed to him. He lived in Dalby, Queensland, before enlisting and played five-eighth in the Dalby Waratah Rugby League team. He was a member of the team in 1911 when they won the Vowles Cup.
Henry enlised with his friend Ernie Starling in Dalby in 1915 and they fought together in the same battalion. He was wounded in the left shoulder at Pozieres, Belgium, on 25 July 1916. He said he spent all night in a trench before he could get any medical help. He was greatful that he was treated by English doctors who saved his arm. Although he could never lift his arm very high afterwards, he continued painting when he returned to Australia. He lived in Brisbane and was a very kind man.
