A 24 year old carter prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (Pte) with the 11th Reinforcements of the 1st Infantry Battalion from Sydney aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 5 October 1915. After arriving in Egypt, he joined the 1st Battalion and went with them to France in March 1916 and then on 4 August 1916 he transferred to the 1st Light Trench Mortar Battery.
