Private Cyril Edwin Heazlewood (Service No:6031) enlisted in the AIF on 2 May 1916, having served six months with the Tasmanian Rangers. Private Heazlewood embarked with 12th Infantry Battalion 19th Reinforcements from Hobart on 8 August 1916 on board HMAT A70 Ballarat. Private Heazlewood served in France and Belgium and on 5 May 1917 in France was WiA (GSW to shoulder) and hospitalised in England before rejoining his Unit in France. Private Heazlewood embarked for the RTA on 16 June 1919 on board HT Ormonde and was Discharged on 26 September 1919. In 1935, Cyril placed advertisements in Tasmanian newspapers (Trove) stating 'If certain persons of Ulverstone, Evandale and elsewhere do not cease circulating false reports concerning my military service in the Great War, legal proceedings will be taken. I have to my credit military service amounting to three years and 148 days. Cyril Edwin Heazlewood, late 12th Battalion AIF; Conara'.
Born in 1890 at Ulverstone in Tasmania, Cyril was the youngest of twelve children of Henry James Heazlewood (b1844 in Longford, Tasmania) and Hannah Walker (b1844 in Launceston, Tasmania). Henry (a Farmer) and Hannah married in 1866 at Westbury, Tasmania and lived at Port Sorrell before settling in Ulverstone where they raised their family and Henry was a Farmer.
Following his return from WWI, Cyril worked as a Labourer in Leven, Tasmania and in Launceston in 1925 he married Frances (Fanny) Isabella Colgrave (b1869 in Morven, Tasmania) - Fanny was a single mother of nine children. Cyril and Fanny lived at Evandale where Cyril was a Farm Labourer. Following Fanny's death in 1928, Cyril lived in Campbell Town and Ringaroona where he worked as a Gardener. Cyril died in 1954.
