Wendlebury is a village and civil parish about 2 miles southwest of Bicester and about ¹⁄₂ mile from Junction 9 of the M40. A stream flows through the centre of the village, parallel with the main street.

1894 Registration District Bicester. Sub-district of Bletchington, in the County of Oxford. No 56, Seventh July 1894, Wendlebury R.S.D. Joseph Sackville, boy, son of Sarah Ann SEAR formerly KEARSEY, Housemaid Domestic Servant.

He was 21 and the son of Sarah Ann Sear, of 10, Lower Grosvenor Rd., Pimlico., London, England. Native of Dustfield Farm, Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England.

He was the son of Sarah Ann Sear, born in Wendlebury near Bicester. By 1901 he was living with his uncle at Dustfield Farm in Charlbury working on the farm after school. He also served in the 4th Territorial Battalion, The Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. On 23rd August 1913 he emigrated to Australia sailing on the "Ajana" from London for the 54 day voyage to Freemantle. [The Ajana was requisitioned as Australian Troopship A 31 in 1914.] On 11th June 1915 Joseph enlisted in the Australian Infantry in Blackboy Hill, Western Australia. On 25th June 1915 he sailed to Alexandria aboard the Troopship "Karoola". On 1st August 1915 he embarked on the Troopship "Berrima" landing on the Dardenelles on 4th, as part of the 7th Reinforcements.Within 48 hours of his arrival at Gallipoli he had been killed in action, hit by a shell.
