JOHN EDMUND MARNANE, the son of Mr. William and Mrs. Bessie Marnane (née McLuckin), was born at Herberton, North Queensland, on 22nd March, 1896.
He was educated at the State School, Atherton, and Riverview College, Sydney, and entered the service of the Bank on 22nd November, 1912, at Atherton, Queensland. He was transferred to Winton on 22nd November, 1913, and enlisted on 18th October, 1915.
Proceeding to France he joined the 9th Infantry Battalion, with which he served on the Western Front. He was twice wounded, and received his sergeant’s stripes on the field in June, 1918.
