He was allocated to the 58th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Australia in May for service in France. On 27th March 1918 he was killed in action by long distance shelling by the advancing Germans. PRIVATE H. L. HUGHES
Advice has been received by Mr T. Hughes, grocer, of Sebastopol, through the Rev. F. H. Williams, that his third son, Pte H. L. Hughes (Bert) was killed in action in France on 27th March. He left Australia on 4th May 1916 with the 2nd Reinforcements for the 60th Battalion, 15th Brigade, and was later transferred to the 58th Battalion, and had taken part in several big engagements. Previous to enlisting he was connected with the well-known business of T. Hughes and Sons, grocers, Sebastopol and was a general favourite in the borough. He was a prominent member of the Sebastopol Fire Brigade and was a familiar figure in all the fire brigade demonstrations. He was a member of the Sebastopol Tent I.O.R. Pte Hughes was married 12 months prior to enlisting and leaves a widow and one child. The fallen soldier was 28 years, and was a grandson of Cr D. Hughes, of Sebastopol. Great sympathy was expressed on all sides with the relatives of the deceased soldier. His older brother, Cpl Victor Loyola Hughes (SN 89), enlisted three years ago and was killed in France a month later, on 27 April 1918.
