"MR. C. R. MAHONEY

After a lengthy illness, Christopher Reid Mahoney, of Gipps Street, died in the Dubbo District Hospital on Saturday afternoon, aged 45 years. The late Mr. Mahoney, who was a native of Gulgong, was a returned soldier, and served throughout the war, being one of the first to enlist. He won the Military Medal, but was wounded and badly gassed. As a result of his war injuries his health was seriously affected and he had suffered for many years.

Of a quiet, unostentatious nature, he was esteemed by a large circle of friends, and the sincerest sympathy is extended to his widow and seven children, the oldest of whom is only 12. They are Bill, Patricia, Lesley, Ralph, Frank, Jocelyn and Jeanette. The late Mr. Mahoney, who also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Hosey (Sydney) and a brother, Ralph (Sydney), was a grandson of the late Christopher Reid Young, who for many years was a prominent businessman at Gulgong. The funeral took place from St. Brigid's Church on Sunday afternoon to the Catholic section of the Dubbo cemetery, where the Rt. Rev. Monsignor O'Donnell officiated at the graveside. Many returned soldiers were present and the coffin was draped with the Union Jack. C. J. Shakespeare & Son had charge of the arrangements." - from the Dubbo Liberal 27 Jun 1939 (nla.gov.au)
