"Killed in action in France on the 4th of October, 1917, after two years and four months' service in Egypt and France, Gunner William Stanley Opie, eldest son of Senior-Constable and Mrs. Opie, of 90 Edgevale-road, Kew.

William Opie was born on the 18th of February, 1897. He attended the Melbourne High School in 1912-13, and in 1914 was appointed junior teacher at Jumbunna. In 1915, he entered the Teachers College, ceasing duty on the 18th June of the same year. He was an industrious and skilful teacher, studious and persevering.

His friends wrote: "He attended the Albert Park State School, where he obtained a certificate for three years' regular attendance until January, 1909, when he removed to Jumbunna with his parents, and went to the local State school, obtaining his Merit Certificate. At the Melbourne High School, he passed both the Senior and the Junior Public examinations before the age of seventeen.....He sailed for Egypt in September, 1915, and, after several months there, he was sent to France.""
