Sergeant Brooks was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous gallantry over the period of a week from August 30 to September 5 1918 during the attack on Peronne. He was in charge of a section of sappers from the 15th Field Company Engineers who constructed footbridges over the Somme Valley for several days under fire. He also completed a stretcher track at the entrance to Peronne and later maintained and supervised parties on the railway bridges at Flamicourt, then in the hands of the enemy, so was under heavy fire for the whole time.
