Died on this date – 21st February.... Private Alexander Pollock was born in 1893 in Derby, near the town of Bridgewater, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 12th July, 1915 as a 22 year old Labourer from Derby.
Private Pollock embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 29th December, 1915 with the 6th Infantry Brigade, 21st Infantry Battalion, 8th Reinforcements & disembarked at Tel el Kebir, Egypt on 26th February, 1916.
Private Pollock was transferred to 57th Battalion on 15th March, 1916. He embarked from Alexandria, Egypt on 17th June, 1916 and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd June, 1916.
Private Pollock’s next entry on his “Service and Casualty Form” is dated 6th March, 1918, where he has “Rejoined ex leave”. Private Pollock was then detached to 15th Brigade Headquarters for duty on 22nd June, 1918. He rejoined 57th Battalion Unit in July, 1918.
Private Pollock was on leave to U.K. from 26th December, 1918 to 9th January, 1919. He rejoined to Base Depot in January, 1919. He was located at Havre, France on 14th February, 1919 & transferred back to England at Weymouth, 2nd Training Brigade on 15th February, 1919.
Private Alexander Pollock was admitted to No. 3 New Zealand General Hospital at Codford, Wiltshire on 15th February, 1919 originally with influenza & was reported to be Seriously Ill. He died on 21st February, 1919 of Lobar Pneumonia.
Private Alexander Pollock was buried in St. Mary’s New Churchyard (Anzac Cemetery) at Codford, Wiltshire, England. There are 30 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 66 New Zealand Soldiers buried here.
