Son of David Simpson Rpberts Kirkwood and Jennie McCullock Barton Kirkwood of 'Rathven', St. Mark's Road, Randwick, NSW formerly of 'Speen', Wharf Road, Gladesville, NSW.

Brother of William Russell Barton Kirkwood who was killed in action on 3 May 1917 while serving with the 19th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial; Marjorie B. Kirkwood, John Barton Kirkwood DCM, MID who returned to Australia on 16 December 1917 having served with the 13th Battalion; Noel Edmind Barton MC. MID who returned to Australia on 10 January 1918 having served with the Australian General Hospital; David R.B. Kirkwood and Frederick D. Kirkwood
