He was one of eight children, all born at South Darley to Alfred George and Fanny Dorothy Bamford. His first job was as a domestic gardener. At some time after 1911 he emigrated to Mackay, Australia.

He is remembered at Finningley - Holy Trinity & St Oswald Church on the  War Memorial and is also commemorated on Old Mackay Town Hall foyer, Sydney Street, Mackay. Australia .

2nd Bn. Australian Machine Gun Corps formerly with the 49th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement.

He was 28. His parents ran  The Harvey Arms, Finningley, Doncaster, England. Fanny also lived at 14 Whittaker St, Doncaster, England.
