"Mr. Harold Slavin, of Cowra, whose brother (Trooper Arthur Thomas Slavin) was killed in action recently, has received the following letter from Lieut-Colonel J. D. Richardson, dated 29/9/18:-
"I regret to inform you (as doubtless has already been done by the Defence Dept.) that your brother was killed in action at the second battle of Amman on Sept. 25th, 1918. He was unfortunately killed late in the day, practically after the battle had been won, through machine gun fire from a post which had not been up to then reduced. He was a good soldier and a type Australia can ill afford to lose. His effects are being forwarded to you through the Defence authorities. I tender you my sincere sympathy."
The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Slavin, of Perthville, and was 35 years of age. He enlisted in Cowra only about twelve months ago, and was attached to the 7th Light Horse." - from the Cowra Free Press 30 Nov 1918 (nla.gov.au)
