Biography contributed by Paul Lemar

Herbert William MAYO was born in Quorn on 03.12.1881, the son of William Matthew (born 16.08.1856, died at Pt Augusta 16.09.1935) and Mary Ann Jane MAYO (born 1856 died at Pt Augusta 07.04.1934).

Herbert William MAYO joined the AIF on 11.10.1915 and was allocated service number 1841. He was a camel driver by trade. He was assigned to the 13th reinforcements of the 9th Light-Horse.

The battalion embarked for Egypt in February 1916. Herbert MAYO suffered a number of illnesses including malaria in Egypt and spent some time in army hospitals. However, he kept returning to duty. During the battle of Gaza, he was knocked down by an exploding shell

On 15.07.1916, he was taken on strength to the 2nd Australian Imperial Camel Brigade then on 25.01.1917 to the 3rd Australian Imperial Camel Brigade. Medical reports on his AIF file indicate he suffered from painful burst abscesses (probably from riding camels) and hip problems.

On 22.10.17, he was invalided to 14 AGH for return to Australia. On return to Australia he was discharged on medical grounds on 03.01.1918. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He was granted a military pension of 15 shillings per fortnight.
