Biography contributed by Joseph Baldacchino

On his return to Australia, he sponsored Olive, who he met in London prior to embarking on his voyage to Australia.  He married her in Australia sometime in 1920/21 as far as I am aware.  He also changed his surname to Baldwin.  He settled at 72 Moxon Road, Punchbowl, NSW and passed away in February 1971.  He is buried with his wife at St Saviour's Anglican Cemetary, Canterbury Road, Punchbowl.

Biography contributed by Gabriella Baldacchino

George Baldacchino was born in January 1891 in a small country in the Mediterranean ocean called Malta. He lived with his father, Nicola Baldacchino, he was quickly baptised in to the Catholic Church and when he was old enough and he migrated to Australia leaving his family behind in Malta. He lived in Goulburn, New South Wales and due to a war camp in the area, the influence to fight in the war was quite high. After arriving in Goulburn George became a plate layer working to inspect and maintain the railway. Before enrolling to fight in the war George was not romantically with a partner and lived alone.

On the second of October 1917, George enlisted at the local Goulburn post office, although this was three years after the war began. George was only 23 years old and he became a private, (the lowest military rank) and part of the 3rd Battalion, 25th Reinforcement just like most of the men from Goulburn at the time. After George passed his medical examination he set sail from Sydney’s port on the HMAT A14 Euripides during the 31st of October 1917.  Under the command of W.O Shore Cobby, George arrived at camp on the 16th of November after a 17 day journey.

In 1919 once the war was over, George Baldacchino returned back to Boorara Australia and was soon awarded the star medal, British war medal and the victory medal.
