Biography

"Death of a Member of the First Expeditionary Force. Trooper W. C. McLeish Dies in Egypt

News has just come to hand by cable of the death of William Carlyle McLeish ("Gunnie") one of the members of the First Expeditionary Force who left Yea on the evening of Thursday, 20th August, 1914, to take up arms in defence of the Empire. A cable was received by his parents on Tuesday from Captain Maygar announcing that he was seriously ill; This was followed by another from the Defence Department announcing that their son was dangerously ill from typhus.

From the outset the parents feared the worst, and their fears proved too well founded, as a cable was received this morning by Mr J. Tosh, an uncle of the deceased, from Lieut, R McAlpin, announcing that his death took place this morning at Mena Hospital, Guizeh, Egypt. Immediately the news became known a gloom was cast over the town, and the flags at the Shire hall and other business places were flown at half mast and the deepest sympathy was expressed for the bereaved parents, Mr and Mrs D. McLeish of the Commercial hotel, and their family.

The deceased soldier, "Gunnie," who was only 27 years of age, was of a rollicking, jovial disposition, which made him a general favorite in the town, and he will be greatly missed by everyone, He took a very prominent part in all sport, and was one of Yea's best footballers. He was one of the first to volunteer for active service and fully realised all the risks attached to his so doing, yet he felt that it was his duty, although parting from his parents was a severe trial, It may be truly said of him that he gave his life for others. Particulars of his last moments and death will be anxiously awaited." - from the Yea Chronicle 08 Apr 1915 (nla.gov.au)
