A Forgotten Digger no more.
68 years ago today, on the 11th August 1951, Private James Henry Bailey, 33rd Battalion, station hand (wool expert), of Gurley Station, Moree, New South Wales, father of six, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 59. ANGLICAN 3-185. 16.
Born at Narrabri, New South Wales on the 11th January 1892 to James Henry and Alice Mary Bailey nee Bateman; husband of Emily Amelia Bailey nee Goater (married 28.8.1918 at the Southwark Register Office, Camberwell, London, died Maitland Hospital, 1992), James enlisted February 1916 at Moree, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 11.2.1917 (GSW left shoulder, severe - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article112998574), 25.7.1918 (GSW arm & head), Mr Bailey returned home February 1920 with wife and child.
James’s name has been inscribed on the Moree Honour Roll - Boer War & World War One.
Upon being notified by James's Granddaughter Uyvonne Rainer that Mr Bailey had been resting in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery, a service was organised May 2019 with the placing of a white wooden cross to honour James’s service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
I was joined by Mr Bailey’s daughter in law Shirley Bailey, Granddaughter Uyvonne Rainer and bugler Kye Jeffriess, who sounded the Last Post.
Unfortunately, no funeral notice has been located.
An application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip submitted May 2019, and was accepted July 2019.
Upon completion of official commemoration, photos will be posted.
