Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

64 years ago today, on the 20th September 1957, Private Samuel George Tarrant, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2167), horse driver (NSW Govt Railways and Tramways) from Little Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 16 Hopkins Street, Merewether, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. CATHOLIC 2-41. 122.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 14th October 1886 to Samuel George and Catherine Tarrant of 44 Bourke Street, Redfern, New South Wales; husband of Margaret Jane L Tarrant nee Palmer (married 1920, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1957), Samuel enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (shell shock, Battle of Fromelles).
Admitted to hospital 3.11.1916 (trench feet), 12.11.1917 (trench fever), 20.5.1918 (cellulitis left leg).
Samuel returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 13th September 1919.

Mr. Tarrant’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Memorial Gates and the Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, (unveiled on the 20th December 1919, 70 names inscribed, 11 Fallen). Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.

Applied for a Discharge Certificate 2 months before his death.

Applied for Campaign Ribbons 5 months before his death.

I have placed poppies at Samuel’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
