William suffered shell-shock at Gallipoli and was invalided to England. He returned to Australia and was discharged as medically unfit 08 May 1916. Determined to do his part, he re-enlisted 15 February 1917 in Brisbane at the age of 44 and gave his address as Brisane and occupation no as a railway employee. He left Australia for active service in France 11 May 1917.
He married Ellen Leab at Bournebrook England 29 August 1917 and was discharged in England 22 November 1919. He had been offered employment at Cullerton Moor Station in Scotland in 1919.
