John embarked with his unit, the 48th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement from Sydney on board HMAT A54 Runic on 22 March 1918 and disembarked in London on 6 April. He served out the remainder of the war in England. On 29 January 1919 John was sent to France where he served for 6 months prior to returning Sutton Veny, England then to Australia on the Argylshire on 18 September where he was discharged on 11 October.
