Clarence joined the 16th Battalion and left Australia on HMAT Borda on 11 January 1916. He went to Tel-el-Kebir in March and proceeded to France early in 1917. Clarence served there throughout the duration of the war and returned to Australia on the China on 1 May 1919, disembarked on 6 June and was discharged on 27 September.
