He was 34 and the son of Joseph and Annie Fleming, of 109, English St., Dumfries, Scotland.

He is one of two Australian casualties commemorated on the Dumfries Town memorial which stands outside St John's Church, Lovers Walk, Dumfries. It takes the form of a figure of Scottish soldier in service dress with head bowed and reversed rifle, on square granite monument with a fluted pillar at each corner. There are 216 men listed for World War 1 and 336 for World War 2.

The other being Private Thomas James Thomson, Service Number 1115, of the 4th Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F. who died 11/05/1915.
