Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Fred Jnr was the eldest of six children of Frederick (Fred Snr) Makings (born 1867 in Lincolnshire, England) and Mary Jane Ridsdale (born 1864 in Ipswich, QLD). Fred Snr was a Farm Hand when he came to Brisbane, QLD in 1888 on board the Waroonga. In 1890 he married Mary in Ipswich, QLD and they settled at Freestone Creek on the Darling Downs where they raised their family. Fred Snr was a Farmer when Mary died in 1904 - their two daughters had died in infancy. Following Mary's death, Fred relocated with his four sons to Peacock Creek at Bonalbo near Tenterfield in NSW, where he was a Grazier.

Fred Jnr was a Farm Labourer in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:7509) with the 9th and 15th Infantry Battalions, and was hospitalised in 1917 with Mumps. In July 1918 Fred was WiA in France, and was Discharged in November 1919. Brother Charles Henry (Private, Service No:2650) also served in WWI.

Returning to Bonalabo in NSW where he worked as a Labourer, Fred married Ivy Kathleen McNamara (born 1910 in Grafton, NSW) in 1926 at Casino, NSW. Fred and Ivy settled in Bonalbo, NSW where Fred worked as a Labourer until his Death in 1960. Ivy died in 1997.
