Son of Stephen Thorn Vandewater and Mary Vandewater of Marion Street, Enmore, NSW. Brother of Stephen Clyde Vandewater who returned to Australia on 6 June 1919 having served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade.
Commenced return to Australia on 24 January 1919 aboard HT Delta disembarking on 22 March 1919
