Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

75 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 11th November 1947, Private Ernest Rounsley, 9th Australian Field Ambulance (Nursing Staff, Reg No-1230), labourer (Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited) from Hampton Avenue, Adamstown, New South Wales and 4 Mackie Avenue, New Lambton, N.S.W., father of two (Neville and Keith), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. METHODIST 4-19. 16.

Born at Tanfield Lea, Durham, England about 1891 to Eli and Isabel Rounsley of 11 John Street, Tanfield Terrace, Tantobie, Durham, England; husband of Maud (Maudie) Rounsley nee Lloyd (married 1921, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1980, age 84, sleeping here), Ernest enlisted January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 28.2.1917 (shell concussion), 7.5.1917 (GSW right cheek), 7.5.1918 (GSW right thigh, mild).

Invalided to England 11.5.1918.

Roll of Honour, 23.7.1918, for Private Stanley G A Penfold, 35th Battalion, KIA 4.4.1918, awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery - ANGLICAN 1-41. 89., by his loving friend, Private E. Rounsley.

Ernest returned home August 1919, discharge date unknown.

Mr. Rounsley’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial, Adamstown Municipal District Roll of Honor, Adamstown Methodist Church Honour Roll, Sulphide Corporation Pty Ltd Cockle Creek Works Roll of Honour and the Adamstown Loyal Pride (126) M.U.I.O.O.F. Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Ernest’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record incorrectly states Died after Discharge, 9/11/1951, died 9/11/1947.

Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance - Rookwood Cemetery - Sydney.
