Add my storyBiography
Charles meates was one of 3 girls and 6 boys born to Thomas & Elizabeth Meates who lived at 230 Holden St. Fitzroy. Charles & his brother Valentine joined the Victorian Militia and served in the artillary until both joined the AIF. Valentine rose to Major and was awarded the Military Cross. Charles was employed all his working life at the Colonial Gas Company in Melbourne and was the Manager of the Fitzory and Preston Depots upon his retirement in 1940. He refused to apply for a Repatriation Pension as he felt he only did his duty when he joined the AIF at the age of 40 years and having a young family at the time. His son Eric joined the field artillary in the Second AIF in 1939 and returned home. Charles and his family lived at 33 Woolton Avenue Northcote.
