Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Stanley Monteith Lane was born in Kooringa, South Australia, on February 23rd. His parents were Philip Lane (1833-1912) and Louisa James (1843-1922) Prior to enlistment, Lane's occupation was listed as a Merchant.

In November of 1916, at the age of 34, Stanley enlisted in the A.I.F. He stood at 5 feet and 9 inches, and weighed 86 kilos. He was described to have a dark complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. His mother Louisa Lane was his nominated next of kin.

After a year of training and preparation, he left from Sydney for active service in November 1917, traveling through Suez, Alexandria, Taranto, and Southampton before arriving in France in March 1918, where he joined the 3rd Division Artillery 17th March 1918. He was taken on strength with 7th Field Artillery Brigade.

In December 1918, just after the war’s end, he was hospitalised with a sickness causing facial paralysis, which had him placed in the 56th Field Ambulance, and was moved to the 12th Casualty Clearing Station. He was then tranferred to the 16th General Hospital, in Le Treport, and finally was sent to No. 1 Convalescent Depot, Le Havre to recover.

In 1919 he was classified as B1 (fit for light duties), and arrived at Southhampton again and sent to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth for light duties and recovery.

By April of 1919, he was able to return home aboard H.M. Nevassa, disembarking at Adelaide on 3 May 1919.

He was discharged on 19 May 1919, completing 2 years and 198 days of service.  Soon after returning, Lane was elected Mayor of Kooringa in 1919, serving until 1920, a year before his marriage. In 1921, he married Helen Clarissa Lane, née Morrison, on Wednesday, 30th March, in Norwood.

Stanley Monteith Lane died on the 9th of May, 1954, at Kadina hospital.
