Francis James Flavel was born in Crystal Brook, South Australia on the 7th of August, 1887. Before the war, Flavel worked as a Packer/Salesman.

Flavel enlisted in the AIF on the 27th March, 1915, at Keswick, South Australia, and embarked from Melborne on the 31st May, 1915, aboard the HMAT A2 Geelong.

Flavel was discharged from the war on the 22nd April, 1919 and returned to Australia. Flavel continued his post-war career to work as a packer until he retired.

Flavel died of natural causes at the age of 75 and the 7th April, 1962.
