Sydney Alexander Gordon MARSHALL was born on 1st June 1898 in Ulverstone Tasmania

Sydney Alexander Gordon Marshall was the youngest one of four sons of Enoch and Margaret Marshall of Ulverstone, Tasmania, who enlisted and served overseas during WW1.

Two of the brothers lost their lives, the oldest, 26/592 Sergeant Abraham Alexander Marshall 4th Battalion 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade, died of wounds in France on 14 July 1916, age 36.

Another brother, Lieutenant Albert Morris Marshall 15th Battalion was captured by the Germans at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. He was a prisoner of war in Germany for over 18 months.

Another brother, 3171 Corporal Thomas Arnold Marshall 21st Battalion AIF, was three times wounded and returned to Australia in 1919.

Sydney was only 17 years of age when he enlisted in the original 40th Battalion. The unit was sent to the Western Front during late 1916. Sydney was wounded in action during the Battle of Messines in June 1917. He was evacuated to England with a wound to the thigh. After he recovered, he was sent back to the front and he was reported missing near Passchendaele on 13 October 1917. He was later reported to be have been seen to be struck by shellfire on or near that date. Although reported to have been buried on the field with a map reference, his grave was lost after the war.
