Bernard was the tenth of eleven children of Ernest Marlin (born 1856 in Richmond NSW) and Laura Anne Kennedy (born 1859 in Richmond NSW). As a member of the Richmond Volunteer Rifles (Regimental No:7886), Ernest received a Land Grant in 1875. A Carpenter and Builder, Ernest married Laura in 1877 and they settled in Richmond to raise their family. Ernest expanded the family business in 1894 to provide funeral services, including coffins. He was known as a keen athlete and cricketer, and was one of the oldest members of the Richmond Branch of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows. Ernest's eldest son Fred hung himslef in his father's business premises in 1896. Ernest died in 1915.

In 1913 Bernard was a Labourer living in Pennant hills in Sydney, NSW, and he married Clara Elizabeth Goodwin (born 1896 in Orange, NSW) in 1914 at Balmain in Sydney NSW. He enlisted in the AIF initially as a Private (Service No:23) with Light Horse Field Ambulance. He stated in his Attestation Papers that he was on leave in September 1914 (unfit for duties) when he enlisted with the 13th Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service No:1025). Bernard served in Gallipoli, and was hospitalised at Valetta Hospital in Malta with Influenza in Septemebr 1915. He was in Belgium in October 1916 when he was awarded the DCM for 'conspicuous gallantry (in the field at Belgium). After ammunition in his equiptment exploded he continued to lead his men with great courage and determination. Later he carried out valuable reconnaissance' (Citation: General Birdwood at ceremonial parade in France, 1916).

Brother Bob (Trooper, Service No:548) served in the Boer War; and brothers Albert (Private, Service No:3140); Frank (Private, Service No:3154) KiA in 1916 near Pozieres, France; and Archie (Private, Service No:2728) KiA in 1918 at Villers Bretonneux, France in 1918 also served in WWI.

Returning to Pennant Hills in Sydney NSW, Bernard worked as a Linesman. He died in 1966 and Clara in 1974.
