Son of Frederick Veness and Ann Veness of 'Raeburn', Rae Street, Randwick, NSW.

Brother of Isaac Edward Veness who returned to Australia having served with the 6th Light Horse Brigade; Uland Wilfred Veness who returned to Australia on 10 August 1919 having served with the 1st Field Company Engineers.

Commenced return to Australia on 2 December 1917 aboard HT Persic disembarking on  14 February 1918
