Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
38 years ago today, on the 4th August 1986, Private George Washington Gunther, Australian Corps Working Party (Reg No-7247), clipper from Edward Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 88. CATHOLIC 1-17. 43.
Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 22nd February 1898 to William Bernard, died 31.5.1935, 2 Percival Road, Stanmore, N.S.W., age 67, and Margaret Jane Gunther nee Reilly, died 30.12.1951, Mosman, N.S.W., age?, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-17. 45, no funeral notice located; husband of Laurie Josephine Gunther nee Beck, married 1928, Mosman, N.S.W., died 2.4.2000, age 92, George enlisted on the 12th March 1917 with the 3rd Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A46 Clan Macgillivray on the 10th May 1917.
Wounded in action - 23.4.1918 (GSW face, left wrist, left leg, left groin & chest).
Admitted to hospital 6.11.1917 (spinal fever), 6.6.1918 (scabies).
Granted furlough in England from 22.5.1918 to 5.6.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 2.1.1919.
George arrived home invalided on the 17th February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 20th April 1919.
Mr. Gunther’s name has not been inscribed on the Kurri Kurri War Memorial or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
