Arthur was born in Fremantle in 1890. Next of kin was Joseph Meller of Bibra Lake and his mother was Eliza (née Gill). They later moved to Chester St, South Fremantle. Joseph was a well-known organist at Presbyterian Church services, built a few houses in the Bibra Lake district and had a road in Bibra Lake named after him. A cheery, popular and respected man and a pioneer in market-gardening, he met his death by drowning when a boat he was fishing from overturned near Penguin Island in 1923. The memorial service was held at Scots Church.
Arthur enlisted on the 28.11.16 at Fremantle, aged 26 years 1 month. He was a dairyman and Presbyterian. Arthur was described as being 5 feet 7½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 34-37 inches, fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was appointed Private with the Service Number 7273 with the 16th Battalion/24 reinforcements. Arthur embarked from Fremantle on HMAT Miltiades A28, arriving in Devonport on the 27.3.17. He proceeded to France on 9.7.17, joining his battalion on 27.7.17. He was killed in action in Belgium on the 8.8.1917, aged 27. Arthur is Memorialised at Ypres (Menin Gate) on panel 17. His name was later added to the Scots Honour Roll.
