Charles Richard Blakeney was born in Murwillumbah in Northern New South Wales in about 1892. He served in the Royal Australian Navy from July 1911 until March 1914 when his 3 year period of enlistment ended. Initially he was a Stoker 2nd Class on Parramatta however he progressed to Stoker and his service included that on HMAS Australia in UK waters in 1913.
He enlisted in the AIF in January 1915 and due to his prior service was able to embark in March 1915. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and then England the Western Front, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Australian Army Ordnance Corps. He was returned to Australia in January 1920. During World War Two he had home service as a Lieutenant in 7 Garrison Battalion from September 1941 until November 1943.
