A labourer from Mannerim via Geelong, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Harding embarked with the 25th Reinforcements, 6th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Themistocles on 4 August 1917.

Later gassed he was evacuated to England where he subsequently contracted influenza.

He returned to Australia on 25 April 1919 and was medically discharged. He later served in the Second World War with the Headquarters Victoria Lines of Communication Area.
