Son of Peter Van and Mary Ann Van nee Ryon of Osborne Street, Bendigo, Victoria. Brother of Ernest Leslie Van who return to Australia on 8 June 1919 having served with the 11th Field Artillery Brigade. Another brother Claude enlisted but was found to be under age and was discharged.

Commenced return to Australia 12 May 1919 aboard HT Soudan disembarking on 29 June 1919
