Sergeant William Oliver Westlake (Service No:582) initially served in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve and was in Sydney when he enlisted in the AIF on 1 September 1916. Sergeant Westlake served with the Australian Naval and Medical Expeditionary Force, Army Medical Corps and made several journeys to New Guinea prior to Discharge on 5 December 1917. In WWII he served in the ACMF (WOII; Service No:V351463) with 8th Battalion VDC from 28 March 1942 to 20 September 1945.

Born in Kenmare, Victoria in 1896, William was the eldest of six children of William Henry Westlake (b1864 at Big Gorge in Yankalilla, South Australia) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Esther Dellar (b1868 in Hamilton, Victoria). William Snr settled in Kenmare in 1890 and was a Farmer when he and Lizzie married in 1895 in Willenabrina. They lived at Kenmare before settling in Portland in 1910. William Snr was a Farmer and served as Borough councillor and member of the Hospital Board, and was a prominent member and life Deacon of the Baptist Church (Trove: Obituary 1949)

William was a Farmer in Portland, and in 1923 in Geelong married Dorothy May Mattingley (b1897 in Geelong, Victoria). William and Dorothy settled in Portland where they raised their family and William was a Farmer until his death in 1957. Dorothy died in 1956.
