Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Eldest of two brothers who served in WWI, and two who served in WWII, Private Samuel Harry Westlake (Service No:18264) enlisted in the AIF on 4 July 1916, and was attached to Army Medical Corps (AAMC) - General Reinforcements on 24 July 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Albany WA for Liverpool on board A16 HMAT Port Melbourne. Transferred to 14th Field Ambulance in November 1917, Private Westlake embarked on 25 September 1919 from England for Fremantle on board HT Mahana, and was attached to 14th Field Ambulance at Discharge on 3 December 1919.

Sam was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1893, second of six children (sons) of William John Westlake (b1865 in Dunedin, New Zealand) and Annie Jane Harry (b1863 in Cornwall, England). Annie immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1869, arriving in Melbourne on board the Lincolnshire, and William arrived in Melbourne in 1888 on board the Te Anau. William was a Coppersmith and Annie a Dressmaker in 1890 when they married in Ballarat, Victoria. By 1893 William and Annie had moved to Western Australia, and settled in Fremantle, where they raised their family and William was a Coppersmith with the WAGR. The family lived in Fremantle and Cottesloe Beach before moving to Caversham in Guildford in the early 1920s - William worked as a Coppersmith/Foreman with WAGR.

Sam was an Agriculture Student at The University of Western Australia in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge, he settled at Caversham in Guildford where he was a Vigneron. In 1925 in Perth, Sam married Ada Muriel Cooper (b1903 in Perth, Western Australia). Sam and Ada settled in Wyalkatchem, where they raised their family and Sam was a Farmer (in partnership with his brother Gordon until 1948 - SW & G Westlake Farmers). In the early 1950s Sam and Ada moved to Safety Bay, where Sam was a Farmer. Sam died in 1975 and Ada in 1990.
