Spencer was the fourth son of Mrs. C.R. Willington of Melrose.  Spen attended the Melrose State School and enlisted with the 48th Infantry Battalion at Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.  On August 31, 1916, Spen was killed in action aged 38 years and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery No 2 in Frnace,  He was one of three sons who served in the Great War.
