Daniel Robert Preston joined the army on 12 January 1917 when he was only 16. He was a juvenile offender spending time in the Mittagong Farm Home for Boys from when he was 11. In France he received a severe shrapnel wound to his right leg and was invalided to England. He offended constantly while in the army, even serving time in Wormwood Scrubs Prison in England. He was denied his service medals.
After returning to Australia he continued his criminal behavour and spent his whole life in and out of gaol. He died in Geelong Gaol, Victoria in 1953.
