"Casualty List. DIED OF WOUNDS. Private Valentine Cain.

We deeply regret to record the death from wounds received in action of Private Valentine Cain, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs H. Cain, of Maria River. The deceased soldier had been in France since Easter Sunday last. His father received the ominous news last week that he had been badly wounded by a gunshot, and had been admitted to hospital in France. Subsequently his worst fears were confirmed by the receipt of a message announcing his death. Deceased was a young man of quiet and likeable disposition, popular with his associates, and his death adds another to the long list of local lads who have fallen in defence of the preservation of the freedom of the world. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved parents and other relatives." - from the Port Macquarie News and Hastings River Advocate 19 Oct 1918 (nla.gov.au)
