John Alfred Richards one of three children to John Richards junior and Elizabeth Piety.

He was also the grandson to Caroline Richards nee Carr and John Richards senior from Bingerang, Garah, New South Wales. John Alfred Richards is the descendant of Gamilaroi/Gomeroi people from northern NSW with Anglo-Celtic ancestry.
