James Hamilton was one of three brothers who enlisted in the AIF from Tasmania. He was the only survivor; three times badly wounded including being gassed during 1918. He returned to Australia during early 1919. His brothers died within a day of each other, 4323 Corporal Thomas Hamilton M.M. & Bar also of the 12th Battalion AIF had been killed in action 6 October 1917 and 5712 Private Robert Francis Hamilton 12th Battalion AIF was killed in action 7 October 1917, aged 25.
James had enlisted on the same day as his brother Thomas, and they were given consecutive regimental numbers in the 12th Battalion.
