At the front Hampshire was seriously wounded by shrapnel around Quinn's Post, at Gallipoli, on 19 May 1915, which fractured his right knee and resulted in a silver plated being affixed to his leg. The wound made him unfit for further duty and he returned to Australia in March 1916.
