Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

Private Vernon Brookes, son of Mr. R. T. Brookes, of Soldiers' Hill, Ballarat, was born on the 23rd of September, 1892.

He attended the Ballarat Agricultural High School in 1903-9, and, in 1910, was appointed a junior teacher at the Smeaton School. He was transferred to the Eureka-street School, Ballarat; and, afterwards, as head teacher, to Skene's Creek, near Apollo Bay, and to Wangrabelle, in East Gippsland. He gave up charge of the last-named school in order to enlist.

Entering the A.I.F. on the 1st of October, 1914, he embarked with the 7th Battalion on the transport Hororatu on the 19th. After training for some time in Egypt, he went with his unit to Gallipoli, and was killed at the Landing on the 25th of April, 1915.

His brother, Lieutenant Leslie Brookes, holds an Imperial commission.

The record of Vernon Brookes shows him to have been an intelligent, capable, and conscientious teacher.
