Died on this date – 26th December…… Walter Gordon Dalgleish Ibbott was born at Hobart, Tasmania on 10th October, 1885.
He married Emma Smith on 25th April, 1908 in St. Martin’s Church, Queenstown, Tasmania.
On 7th August, 1916 Walter Gordon Ibbott enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as a 30 year old, married, Butcher (with 3 children) from Queenstown, Tasmania.
Private Walter Gordon Ibbott, Service number 6570, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20th October, 1916 with the 12th Infantry Battalion, 21st Reinforcements. He was transferred to HMAT Ascanius (Note: The Casualty Form – Active Service recorded he transferred to “A11 Ulysses” which is incorrect. A11 was Ascanius) at Sierra Leone on 4th December, 1916.
He died on 26th December, 1916 at Sea on board HMAT Ascanius (A11) from Toxaemia & was buried at Sea later that day.
Private Walter Gordon Ibbott is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
